New York, NY — (AP) New York is the epicenter of the global poker boom, with more than 3,000 casino operators and other businesses operating at more than 200 sites, according to a new report from the Interactive Gaming Association.
“The growth of online poker in New York has been extraordinary,” said Mike Hickey, executive director of the association.
“The success of online casinos has been a boon for all sides of the game, including our own.”
New York State has become the epicentre of the online poker boom.
The state’s casinos, which were established in the 1990s, attracted more than $7 billion in revenue last year.
It also had the fourth-highest percentage of poker machines in the United States at over 40 percent.
Poker machines are hooked up to computers that are connected to the Internet.
Players can bet on live games and in-person events.
Casino operators have made billions in the last decade by tapping the state’s casino tax revenue and the fact that it has become a popular gambling destination for Americans, the Associated Press reported.
Online poker sites have emerged as a key battleground for the industry, with sites that are not regulated in New Mexico, Delaware and Nevada.
The industry has also become a magnet for organized crime, with the rise of online betting sites and black market bingo rooms.
